Hidden MSG - Dr Ekberg
Hi, So here we are in a popular food store, and we're looking at products that may or
may not contain MSG.
So we look at the shelves.
And here is some bouillon cubes and once we read the ingredient list it says yeast extract
and hydrolyzed soy protein and those are a give away for containing MSG.
That is how they disguise it.
They don't actually add MSG, but they add something that has the same constituents and
has the same effect as MSG.
And down below there is a disclaimer says product has no MSG added except which occurs
naturally in a hydrolyzed soy protein and yeast extract.
In other words, it is guaranteed to have MSG in it.
Then we look a little bit over here and the label says no MSG and then we read the label
and it says hydrolyzed proteins and autolyzed yeast extract.
So again here is a product that says it has no MSG which is guaranteed to have MSG. (glitch repeat - which is guaranteed to have MSG)
So unfortunately it is virtually impossible to buy anything that relates to soup or bouillon
that does not have MSG.
Come back this way real quick.
So here we go Pacific Natural Foods and it says organic so that has to be good, right?
Well now we look the bottom and we see autolyzed yeast extract guaranteed to have MSG in it.
Sorry folks just telling it like it is.
So here we got the one called Amy's Organic Soups and here you can never know for sure
but there are a couple of good indications here there is nothing in the list that is
even remotely suspicious except maybe organic spices they could hide pretty much anything in there, but
in this case I would think not.
Because of how much effort they go into and know sort of what the company stands for.
It says no added MSG It says no hidden ingredients very specifically so this one is most likely
okay.
